Social Networking Panel

In today’s fast-paced world, keeping up with your contacts evolves daily, as does staying a step ahead of the competition….Do the following words sound foreign to you? Blogging; Facebook; Twitter; LinkedIn? If not foreign, then maybe just completely overwhelming?

Come learn what they are, how to keep up with them all, and how you can use them to your advantage and build your business. Whether a beginner or someone who knows how to use them but just can’t figure out what to do with them all, this session is for you!

Jason Hull manages business development and business processes for OpenSource Connections. A graduate of the United States Military Academy with an MBA from the University of Virginia Darden Graduate School of Business, Jason draws upon his extensive military and business experience to solve problems. As a tank platoon leader and a tank company executive officer during his two tours of duty in Bosnia, Jason served in multiple leadership positions in the Army. After graduate school, Jason served as a director of analysis for Capital One, managing call center forecasting, technology, and agent performance.

Panelist: Polly Black, CMO, BoldMouth Inc.

Polly Black is the Chief Marketing Officer of the Charlottesville based social media agency, BoldMouth, Inc.

Prior to joining BoldMouth last year, Polly spent six years as a strategic consultant, providing expertise in long range planning, portfolio alignment, brand repositioning, new product development, segmentation studies, and target refinement.

Polly’s corporate experience includes Vice President Marketing positions at Newell Rubbermaid, Inc with Levolor and at HanesBrands, Inc, at that time part of Sara Lee, where she had responsibility for $1b in business. Polly began her career at Frito Lay, Inc. working on Lays and Cheetos as well as new product introductions. Polly holds an MBA from the University of Virginia Darden School, a Master’s degree from Columbia University and an undergraduate degree from Vassar College.

Polly is a strong strategic marketer who thrives on creating connections and identifying and capturing market opportunities. She is loving the fast paced and immediate world of social media and is savvy in bringing her experience to bear in integrating social media into the marketing mix to maximum effect.

When you meet Polly, don’t be surprised by her British accent or the occasional “u” that finds its way into her spelling. Polly is British, has a multicultural background. She speaks and writes fluent French as well as both the US and UK versions of English!

Panelist: Bryon Sabol, UVA, Adjunct Faculty, School of Continuing & Professional Studies/Creative Manager, WorldStrides

Bryon Sabol is a Creative Manager at WorldStrides and an Adjunct Faculty Member at the University of Virginia’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies, where he teaches Social Media and Blog Writing. At WorldStrides, he manages integrated marketing communication campaigns for a variety of student travel programs. His recent social media campaign helped to generate over 1.2 million visitors to the WorldStrides website during the two month span.

With over nine years of professional experience in traditional and new media communications, Bryon has had a successful track record in marketing, public relations, advertising, editing, writing, and management.

His work in new media has been featured on international, national, and regional publications and websites, including the Electronic Literature Organization and the Roanoke Times. Before teaching at UVA, he taught English and Creative Writing at Virginia Tech for three years. Bryon has a Master of Fine Arts in English Creative Writing from Virginia Tech and a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism from West Virginia University.

Panelist: Marijean Jaggers, Vice President, Standing Partnership

As a vice president and manager of St. Louis-based reputation management firm Standing Partnership’s satellite office in Charlottesville, Va., Marijean Jaggers offers experience in government relations, strategic communications, community and media relations to clients.

With a background that spans healthcare, business-to-business ventures, technology, finance and nonprofit client work, Marijean’s well rounded history contributes strength and knowledge in support of her clients. Marijean works closely with corporate public affairs and marketing teams for several global businesses in the chemical and healthcare industries, providing counsel for internal communications, branding, community relations and media relations efforts. She also provides counsel to clients throughout Central Virginia including the executive management team of the Charlottesville Albemarle Airport, managing the organizations strategic and crisis communications efforts. .

As a working mother interested in mentoring others, and a professional specializing in social media strategy for clients, Marijean has been blogging as STLWorkingMom since early 2005.

With a strong commitment to community, Marijean serves as a board member of the Charlottesville Albemarle Technical Education Center (CATEC) Foundation and People and Congregations Engaged in Ministry (PACEM), a nonprofit devoted to caring for the homeless. She has also devoted time and effort as a board member of the American Diabetes Association and Delmar Magazine, an independent literary journal. She is a graduate of Lindenwood University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English.

    Bryon, thank you so much for the great presentation at Quadruplicity last week. The panel was immensely helpful as I try to figure out how social media might fit within High Peak Sportswear’s marketing plan. I heard several other participants make similar comments.

    I’m hoping I’ll be able to attend your “Social Media: How to Use It” course through UVA in April… it looks like it’ll cover all the bases!
